"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only one problem: The author likewise desires to be Haim's fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. Several celebrated supporters have publicly coveted the position.

One thing is obvious something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy nominees.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a close unit. Their visuals repeatedly depict them walking in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage people to make music."

"Therefore all gets an invitation to be the honorary member of Haim."

Award Milestone

The band are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," says Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record came out of a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes detail endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed toughness called for a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

A former partner left Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

But the sister act will consistently be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
